Goal of MEXT Teacher Training Scholarship

The goal of MEXT is to develop the development of human resources that will serve as friendship bridges between recipient countries and Japan through their studies in Japan and who aid in the development of both countries as well as the rest of the world.

Eligibility Criteria to Apply

MEXT accepts applications from international students seeking studies in Japan that meet the following requirements and qualifications.

(1) Nationality: Candidates must possess their nationality from a nation that is diplomatically associated with Japan. A person who holds Japanese nationality when submitting their application is not qualified. However, applicants with dual nationality, who have Japanese nationality but whose place of residence as of the moment of application is outside Japan can apply for the visa if they choose the nationality of another country and abjure their Japanese citizenship by the time they arrive in Japan. The first screening must be held by the Japanese diplomatic post in the country in which the applicant selects the nationality.

(2) Age: In general, applicants must be born on the 2nd of April 1988. There are exceptions to this rule only in cases where MEXT determines that an applicant was not able to apply within the limit of eligibility because of the current situation or the circumstances in the country in which the applicant is from (military duty, the loss of educational opportunities due to disruptions caused by conflict, etc.). Personal circumstances (financial situation, family situations and health conditions, and other factors that affect the applicants’ university or their place of employment, etc.).) are not considered as exemptions.

(3) Academic and Career Background:  The applicant must have a degree from teacher-training schools, and have served as a teacher in primary or secondary education institutions or teacher-training institutions (excluding the universities) in their country of origin for a total of five or more years from October 1st, 2024. Faculty members who are in-service at institutions of higher education are not qualified. Candidates must be graduates of teachers’ training or universities and have been employed as teachers in primary or secondary educational institutions or teacher education schools (excluding the universities).

(4) Japanese Language Ability: The applicants are required to be willing to learn Japanese. Candidates should be interested in Japan and determined to increase their knowledge of Japan upon arrival in Japan. Candidates must also possess the ability to conduct research and adjust to life in Japan.

(5) Health:  Applicants must provide a form of health certification signed by a physician attesting the applicant is not suffering from physical or mental issues that hinder the applicant’s ability to study in Japan.

(6) Arrival in Japan: In general applicants need to reach Japan within the specified time (usually between September and October) between two weeks prior to the date that the course starts and the start date that the program begins. If the applicant is not able to be able to arrive in Japan within the period specified due to personal reasons, travel costs to Japan are not covered. Except for those cases that MEXT determines that the circumstances are unavoidable an applicant is required to be able to withdraw from the scholarship program in the event that the applicant is not able to reach Japan at the expiration date of the period, as determined to be determined by MEXT or the university that accepts.

(7) Visa Requirements: A person applying for a visa must generally get a “Student” visa from the Japanese diplomatic post in the country of nationality. Then, they can be admitted to Japan using the newly-acquired residency designation as “Student”. In other words, even if the applicant has a different residency status (“Permanent residence,” “Long-term resident,” or any other. ) The applicant has to switch to “Student” status before re-entering Japan. Additionally, the applicant must be aware of the fact that upon expiration of the status of a MEXT Scholarship student and even in the event that the student reapplied to renew their residency status “Permanent resident” as well as “Long-term resident” these resident statuses may not necessarily be granted. It is important to note that if a grantee travels to Japan without obtaining a new “Student” visa and the grant of the scholarship will be halted.

(8) Return and continue to work after the end of the scholarship period:  Applicants should make sure they return to their country of origin at the end of the month which is the end of the scholarship period. They must also return to their job as a teacher in their primary or secondary school or teacher training institution. The applicants must make use of the findings of their studies about the school system in Japan. If a guarantee does not meet this standard, the person may be required to refund the full amount of the scholarship during the period. People who are unsure regarding returning and returning to their work after the scholarship period are not eligible to apply for this program.
