پرنانی کی جوانی دہلی کے لال قلعے میں گزری تھی۔ بہادر شاہ ظفر ان کی گود میں پلے بڈھے تھے اور ان ہی کی آنکھوں کے سامنے رنگونبھیجے گئے تھے۔پر نانی کا خاندان بہت بڑا تھا جن میں سات بیٹے، پانچ بیٹیاں اور بہت زیادہ پوتے پوتیاں، نواسے نواسیاں تھیں مگر غدر کے زمانے میں کچھ بھی باقی نہ بچا، سب ایک ایک کر کے موت کے منہ میں چلے گئے اور پرنانی بھری دنیا میں اکیلی رہ گئیں۔
آمنہ پرنانی کی نواسیتھی جس کی شادی احمد مرزا سے ہوئی تھی۔ احمد مرزا باپ کے انتقال کے بعد بے ٹھکانہ ہو گیا لہٰذا آمنہ، اپنے شوہر احمد مرزا اور بال بچوں کے ساتھ پرنا نی کے پاس آگئیں۔پرنانی بھی ان کی آمد سے بہت خوش ہوئیں کیو نکہ شاہی زمانے کے بڑے مکان میں اکیلے اکیلے اس کا جی گھبراتا تھا۔ آمنہ اور اس کے خاندان کے آنے سے اس کا دل بہلنے لگا۔
پرنانی کی یادگار چیزوں میں سب سے اہم چیز ایک مرقع یا ہزار خامے کی دلائی تھی جسے سیکڑوں رنگ برنگ کے ٹکڑوں کو جوڈ کر بنایا گیا تھا۔ کپڑے کی کوئی قسم ایسی نہ تھی جس کی کوئی کترن اس دلائی میں نہ ہو۔ سب ہی قسم کے نمونے اور سب ہی قسم کے رنگ اس دلائی میں موجود تھے۔ پرنانی مے اسے دلائی میں اپنی تمام جائیداد کے کاغذات چھپاکر رکھے تھے۔
آمنہ نے پرنانی کی دلائی کا ٹھ کباڑ سمجھ کر پھینک دی تھی۔ جب پرنانی کے بار بار التجا کرنے پر وہ دلائی اس کے حوالے کی گئی تو پرنانی نے بڑے ٹکڑے کو اُدھڑتے ہوئے کہا کہ بچوں! یہ ہزار جامے کی دلائی نہیں بلکہ ہزار داستان ہے اور اسی میں جائیداد کے کا غذات موجود ہیں۔ پرنانی نے پیازی رنگ کے ایک ٹکڑے کو الگ کر کے ہبہ نامہ اس میں سے نکالا اور انھیں احمد مرزا کے حوالے کر کے کہا کہ دوسری جائیداد کی طرح اس کی بربادی کے پیچھے نہ پڑنا۔
