The ‘’Great American ’’who is referred to by Dr. Martin Luther King is American President Abraham Lincoln.
Emancipation Proclamation meant a declaration of emancipation of Negros from slavery in America as declared by President Abraham Lincoln on 1st January 1863 that ‘’all person held as slaves shall be free forever.’’
The life of the Negro in the US one hundred years after the Emancipation Proclamation is still sadly crippled by the manacles off segregation and the chains of discrimination as described by the King. They are still not free.
Dr. King understood very well that his era was just a beginning. It was a beginning of struggle to gain civil rights and racial equality. Although he led the civil rights movement but he was well aware that destination was still far away as it was just a beginning.
Dr King’s advice to the black people not to be violent while marching on the road to freedom. They must not seek to satisfy their thirst for freedom to drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
According to Dr King, they will never be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.
Dr. King dreams of freedom, equality and justice. He dreams such a friendly environment where black and white will get perfect peace and love for each other.
Dr. King has strong faith in freedom and equality of man. He is against any kind of discrimination on the basis of colour, race or creed. He believes in peace, brotherhood and justice for all. He has faith in hope due to which he will gain freedom and racial equality.
Dr. King mean by cashing a cheque, ‘’the Declaration of Independence and its fruits’’ On the other hand, a bad cheque he mean that in real sense independence and its fruits have not yet been got by the Negro. They have still not be given due status in American society. Declaration o independence was just a bed cheque that has come back marked’’ insufficient funds.’’
