ECAT Physics Test Online Chapter Wise

The Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT), primarily conducted by UET Lahore for Punjab engineering universities, is a high-stakes exam. Physics is one of the most critical sections because it tests both your conceptual understanding and your ability to solve numerical problems quickly.

Unlike board exams where step-by-step derivation matters, ECAT requires speed, accuracy, and shortcut techniques.

ECAT Physics Test Pattern

Understanding the battlefield is the first step to winning.

  • Total MCQs: Usually 30 MCQs in the Physics section (out of 100 total MCQs).
  • Marks per Question: 4 Marks.
  • Negative Marking: -1 Mark for every wrong answer. (This is the most critical factor).
  • Total Marks for Physics: 120 Marks.
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate to High (Requires numerical solving).

Crucial Note: Because of negative marking, blind guessing is dangerous. If you are not sure, skipping is often better than guessing.

Syllabus Breakdown (FSc Part 1 & 2)

The syllabus is strictly based on the PTB (Punjab Textbook Board) Physics books of 1st and 2nd Year. Do not rely solely on A-Level books or Federal board books; the terminology and values used in the exam are directly from PTB.

High-Priority Topics (The “Must-Dos”)

Based on past papers, these chapters carry the highest weightage:

From Part 1 (1st Year):

Measurements: Dimensions, Significant Figures, and Precision vs. Accuracy.

Vectors & Equilibrium: Dot/Cross products, Torque, and Equilibrium conditions.

Motion and Force: Projectile motion formulas (Range, Height, Time), Momentum, and Elastic/Inelastic collisions.

Work and Energy: Work done by variable forces, Escape velocity, and Work-Energy principle.

Waves & Oscillations: Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM), Resonance, Doppler Effect (very important), and Speed of Sound formulas.

Thermodynamics: First Law of Thermodynamics, CP/CV relations, and Carnot Engine efficiency.

From Part 2 (2nd Year):

Electrostatics: Coulomb’s Law, Electric Potential, and Capacitor circuits (Series/Parallel combinations).

Current Electricity: Ohm’s Law, Power dissipation, Kirchhoff’s Laws, and Potentiometer.

Electromagnetism: Force on a conductor, Ampere’s Law, and e/m determination.

Electronics: Rectification, Transistors (Base-Emitter-Collector currents), and Logic Gates.

Modern Physics: Photoelectric Effect, Compton Effect, and Uncertainty Principle.

Nuclear Physics: Half-life calculations, Binding Energy, and Fission/Fusion.

Preparation Strategy: How to Study

Phase 1: Textbook Reading (The Foundation)

Read the “Side Information” (Yellow/Blue boxes) in the textbook. ECAT setters love picking MCQs from these “Did You Know?” sections.

Memorize values of constants (e.g., Mass of electron, Planck’s constant, Permittivity of free space). You won’t have time to look them up or derive them.

Phase 2: Formula Sheet & Short Notes

Create a “Cheat Sheet” for every chapter.

Example: For Projectile Motion, write down the direct formulas for $H_{max}$, $R$, and $T$ along with the relation $R_{max}$ at $45^\circ$.

Dimensional Analysis: Memorize the dimensions of tricky quantities like Viscosity, Torque, and Planck’s constant.

Phase 3: Numerical Practice

ECAT Physics is 60% Numerical and 40% Theoretical.

Practice calculations without a calculator. Calculators are allowed in ECAT, but simple calculations ($2\pi$, $\ln(2)$, square roots of common numbers) should be on your fingertips to save time.

Past Papers: UET Past Papers (last 10 years). Many questions are repeated or slightly modified.

Practice Books: KIPS, STEP, or STAR entry test series books are standard for practice.

Online Practice: Websites like gotest.com.pk (as per your interest) provide timed quizzes which are excellent for managing pressure.

Test Day Tips for Physics

Round 1 (The Speed Run): Go through the 30 MCQs. Answer the ones you know instantly (theory-based). Skip the calculation-heavy ones for now.

Round 2 (The Solver): Come back to the numericals. Use approximations (e.g., take $g = 10$ instead of $9.8$ if options are far apart) to solve faster.

Unit Check: Always check the units in the options. Sometimes you can solve the MCQs just by matching the dimensions (Dimensional Analysis) without solving the full equation.

Beware of “All of the Above”: If you see “All of the above” or “None of these,” read the question twice.
