ایک سو پینتالیس ھجری سے پہلے علوم کاتعلق زیادہ تر حافظہ سے تھا۔ عام طور پرسند و روایت کا طریقہ رائج تھا۔ تصنیف وتالیف کا رواج نہیں تھا۔ لوگ ہر بات زبانی یادر کھتے تھے۔ اور حافظے میں محفوظ کر لیتے تھے۔
تعلیم کے دوسرے دور میں اسلام عرب کے ریگستانوں سے نکل کر ہندوستان اور اٹلس پنج چکا تھا۔ لیکن اس وسیع وعریض سلطنت میں نہ کوئی یونیورٹی تھی۔ اور تعلیم کیلئے کوئی کوئی بندوبست موجود تھا۔ اس کے باوجو تعلیم کے اس دوسرے دور میں اسلائی دنیا کے تمام بڑے بڑے شہروں میں علوم وفنون کا چرچا تھا۔ عام تعلیم کیلئے ہزاروں مکتب قائم تھے۔ جوزیادہ تر مسجدوں، خانقاہوں اورعلماء کے
ذاتی مکانات میں قائم کئے گئے تھے۔ ڈاکٹر سپرنگرنے اپنی کتاب میں اس دور کے پانچ لا کھ لا علمائکا ذکر کیا ہے۔ جو درلود ریس میں مشغول تھے۔ علامہ وی کے مطابق ایک ایک دور میں دل دل زارہا علم شرکت کرتے تھے۔
تیسرے دور میں املا کا طریقہ یعنی لکچرد ینا ختم ہوگیا۔ جن مقصود بالذات نہ تھا۔ اس شگافیاں ہونے لگیں۔ منطق،نحو اور صرف پر زیادہ زور دیا گیا۔ جس میں لوگوں کی عمروں کا بہت زیادہ حصہ نذر ہوگیا۔ جو اصلی علوم تھے۔ اس کی طرف کم توجہ دی جانے کی تعلیم کے تیسرے
دور میں فنی تعلیم کے بجائے کتابی تعلیم کی بنیاد ڈالی گئی۔ فلسفہ منطق کی تعلیم گوی مفقود ہوگئی۔
مسجدیں، خانقا ہیں، علماء و فضلاء کے مکانات، مسلمانوں کی تعلیم و تدریس کے مراکز ہوا کرتے تھے۔ بعض شہروں میں تعلیم و تدریس کے لئے خاص جگہیں بھی مقررکی گئی تھیں جہاں علم کے پیاسوں کا ایک مجمع لگارہتاتھا۔
