Gino says that about forty years ago he was talking a long trip on foot over mountain heights quite unknown to tourists. That was barren and colourless land. Nothing grew there but wild lavender.

Jean Gino find himself after three days’ walking in the midst of unparalleled desolation. There were the vestiges of an abandoned village.

Gino says that the living condition of shepherd was absolutely amazing. He was living in a real house built of stone. The place was in order, the dishes washed, the floor swept, his rifle oiled, he was clearly shaved. Everything was seaming absolutely perfect.

Gino decided to stay for the night at the shepherd’s house because the nearest village is still more than a day and a half away. Besides he was perfectly familiar with the nature of the rare villages in that region.

The shepherd poured out a heap of acorns on the table. He began to inspect them, one by one, with great concentration, separating the good from the bed. He had thus selected one hundred perfect acorns and counted them out by tens.

The shepherd carried an iron rod instead of a stick. He began to thrust his iron rod into the Earth, making a hole in which he planted an acorn.

The shepherd had been planting acorn trees for three years. The half of the acorn trees had grown into full grown trees.

Gino discovered about the shepherd’s past life that his name was Elzeard Bouffier. He had once had a farm in the low lands. He had lost his son and his wife departed him. Now he was living in this solitude with his lambs and his dog.

The purpose of shepherd was studying the reproduction of beech trees. His purpose was to grow different kinds of plants.

Gino discovered on his second visit to the area after the World War that the area was not changed. He saw a short of grayish mist that covered the mountain tops.

Shepherd had now a hundred beehives instead of sheep. He had persistently continued to plant. There were birch trees, planted five years before, spreading everywhere.

The extant of the oak tree forest measured by Gino is eleven kilometers at its greatest width.

The man has been planting birch trees in addition to oak trees, spreading out as far as the eye could reach. Gino saw water flowing in brooks that had been dry since the memory of man.

Gino means by chain reaction the process in which the products themselves promote or spread   the reaction. He describes creation of the willows, rushes, meadows, gardens, flowers, reappeared in a result of the chain reaction which he attributes to that man working alone.

Gino saw the man (Elzeard Bouffier) for the last time in June of 1945. He was then eighty-seven.

He discovered about the area that everything had changed. Contrary to the past, there were twenty eight inhabitants, four of them young married couples. The new house freshly plastered, were surrounded by gardens. It was now a village where one would like to live.

Bouffier was 89 years old when he died in 1947.

The detailed description of Bouffier’s abode tells us that he is a self made man and believes in struggle. He shows us that how a person can keep order in his life style along with doing labour.

Gino means that if a person is constructive minded and he intends to create something for his own benefit as well as or the welfare of humanity so he can be effectual in other realms as God helps those who help themselves.

The barren valley changed into a fertile valley with brooks and plants and trees and flowers due to plantation of Bouffier on a large scale. Forest used to conserve the rains and snows in huge capacity which atomatically converted into springs and brooks. Resultantly barren valley changed into a fertile valley.

Gino declares the work of Bouffier as “a work worthy of God” because he knows that God likes such type of works which is not only beneficial for a person himself but also for the whole creature.
