Damon and Pythias were close friends. Their friendship was famous far and wide. They were ready to sacrifice their lives for each other. They were bold and courageous. They were not afraid of the cruel king or his powerful army. They lived on the island of Sicily.
The King was a cruel and merciless ruler. He made cruel laws. The subjects were bound to abide by his laws. If somebody dared to say a word against him or his laws, he would be given the punishment of death.
The people did not rebel against the cruel King because they were afraid of him. The King had a powerful army. If somebody tried to rebel against him, he would be sentenced to death.
Pythias is arrested because he complains against the King. He does not approve of his laws. He criticizes the King for his cruelty towards the people of his country.
The King reacts to Pythias’ disapproval of his laws in a very cruel manner. He calls him a rebel. He orders his soldier to throw Pythias into prison. He sentences him to death after two weeks imprisonment as an example to anyone who dares to criticize his laws.
The King puts Pythias into prison. After remaining in prison for two weeks, he will be hanged before the people in the public square.
When Damon hears about his friend’s imprisonment, he goes to the King’s court. He requests the King to allow Pythias to go home for a few days in order to meet his mother and sister. He offers to take his friend’s place in the prison as long as he out of it. He shows his agreement to sacrifice himself if Pythias does not return by the appointed time.
Pythias is troubled by the thought that his mother and sister will suffer a lot after his death. He wants to make some arrangements for their livelihood. He wants to hand over to them some money which he has for their future use.
