He felt his pride hurt on coming to know that he was not as useful to the medical students as he would have been if he had the housemaid’s knee too.

The author considered himself an acquisition to the medical class because the students of the class would easily find in him all kinds of diseases. He thought that the medical student would not need to walk to the hospital to know about different diseases which were found in different patients. The author’s body having all sorts of diseases would offer to them a chance of getting experience about all types of diseases that are found in the patients in a hospital.

Yes, I have heard the saying “a little knowledge is dangerous thing”. It causes harm rather than giving advantage. It puts one’s life in trouble. I think it is an apt description of the author because he not only disturbed himself by his ignorance but also the doctor and the chemist.

The significance of the doctor’s advice is that a person should not put himself in trouble about a thing of which he does not have a thorough knowledge. The writer, being a layman, got involved in knowledge about various diseases and went through a mental torture until he met the doctor. Here the significance that the doctor’s advice acquires is that diagnosis is not the job of every one.
