KPK 11th Class Computer Chapter 4 Inside System Unit Short Questions Answers

Differentiate between CPU and System /unit.

Central Processing Unit (CP) is the brain of computer. Just like human brain which controls all the activities of human body, the CPU controls all the operations of computer. CPU is also called processor which is located on motherboard. A computer cannot work without CPU.
System Unit is the computer case with the motherboard and all other parts. Cases with the motherboard and all other parts. Cases are normally made of steel or aluminum, but plastic can also be used. System unit holds all the other components together and protect the sensitive electronic parts from the outside elements.

Define two main types of Computer casings.

Ans. Desktop casing is designed to keep on desk and monitor is placed over it. Desktop casing is ideal for less space. It some types of desktop cases can be very difficult to upgrade. It is not ideal to work on the floor.

Tower Casing
A tower PC can be placed on a desk and monitor is kept side by side. It is designed to be placed on the floor or in a desk compartment designed for tower cases. It takes more space.

List different parts of a motherboard.

1) Basic Input Output
System (BIOS)
2) Ports
3) Expansion
4) Ribbon Cable
5) Memory Slots
6) Disk Controller
7) Cooling System
8) Computer Bus

What is the role of BIOS in Computer System?

BIOS stands for Basic Input / Output System. It is a small fixed program that is generally stored in a ROM chip. ROM chip is located on main board.
BIOS is the first program run by a computer when it is powered on. The main purpose of the BIOS is to initialize and test the hardware components such as video card, keyboard, mouse, printer etc and to load an operating system from hard disk. After loading and executing the operating system, BIOS then gives control to the system to load startup files.

Differentiate between a port and a slot.

Slots and port are physical connection points that allow the hardware of a computer to be expanded. A port is a socket. A slot is a dock for a printed circuit board. Slots are also called “expansion slots” because they allow the computer to be expanded. The circuit board that fits into the slot is also called a “card”.

At the back of a desktop computer, number of blocked letterbox-shaped openings located. These show where the slots are on computer. Cards that include ports need to protrude through the case of the computer so that uses can connect peripherals.

Name different types of data cables with their purpose of use.

Data cables are used to transmit electronic information from a source to a destination. There are different types of data cables.
IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) cables:
IDE cable ware used to connect storage devices to a motherboard. The parallel ATA cable is a ribbon cable with two or three connectors. Each connector has 40 pins

Stat (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment):
The serial ATA cables are used in modern computer and laptops to transfer data up to 6 GB per second.

FD (Floppy Disk) cable:
FD is a 34-wire ribbon cable used in the past to connect floppy drives to motherboard.

Why cooling system is important for a computer?

Inside system unit, different hardware such as processor, video card and hard disk generate heat. If the temperature inside the system unit reaches a certain point, it can damage the parts. In modern computers cooling system is used to maintain proper temperature.

Differentiate between SIMM and DIMM.

SIMM DIMM
1 SIMM is Single In-line Memory modules. Software plays important role in RISC processor.
2 Used in 286, 386, 486, pentium and some Macintosh models. DIMM is installed in all modern computers.
3 Storage capacity from 56 KB to 323 MB. Storage capacity from 64 MB to 512 MB.
4 30 or 70 pins were used in SIMM. DIMM have double number of pins.
5 32 bit bus used by SIMMs. 64 bit bus used by DIMMs.
6 Data transfer rate is slower. Data transfer rate is faster.

What is mean by PCL Express Slot?
