The student population grew exponentially enrolling in the 1970s the idea of establishing additional campuses for the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore was developed. In the wake of that it was the University College of Engineering Taxila was founded in the year 1975. For the next three years, it was located in Sahiwal. Then in 1978, it moved to its current location at Taxila. The College continued to function under the administration of the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore till October 1993.

The College was given its own charter as an independent university in the Taxila Order of the United States University of Technology of 1993. Presently, the total number of postgraduate and undergraduate students is in excess of 2000. The campus of the University is situated on the outskirts of Taxila located 5km far from the city. It is situated close to the train station Mohra Shah Wali Shah on the Taxila-Havelian branch line. Taxila is a city in the province of Taxila situated 35 km away far from both cities Islamabad in Pakistan and Rawalpindi located on the principal highway between Rawalpindi and Peshawar. The University buses operate regularly between the campus as well as three cities: Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Wah Cantt. The campus spans 163 acres.

All faculties of teaching, the residence colonies for employees/teachers and student hostels, guesthouses as well as a post office and bank are located on the campus.
