Difference between Makki and Madni Surahs

We shall discuss the critical differences between the Makki and Madani Surahs. Both Makki and Madani Surah have characteristics that set them apart from one another. The Holy Prophet PBUH received the Quran for the first time during Ramadan. Surah Alaq or Iqra, the 96th Surah, contains the first five ayahs of the first revelation. After a brief interval, angel Jibrail appeared and read the first few ayahs of the 74th Surah to the Holy Prophet PBUH (Surah Al-Mudassir). Revelations continued in Makkah and Madinah for the next twenty-three years.

Surah Makki in the Quran

Surahs in the Holy Quran are called Makki or Madni based on when they were revealed. The Holy Prophet PBUH spent the first thirteen years of his mission in Makkah, and all surahs written during this period are known as Makki. Makki Surah is any Surah with a Sajdah. Except for Surah Al-Baqarah, every Surah that mentions the story of Adam (A.S) and Iblis (Shaitan) is Makki. Surahs with Makki Surah include brief verses, a robust rhetorical style, and a rhythmic tone. The Makki surahs are concise and cover topics such as belief in Allah, the Day of Judgment, reward and punishment, and heaven and hell. They are concerned with moral character and issue an appeal to virtue.

Makki Surah Characteristics

• Makki Surahs are often brief. In general, they state the following:
• Belief in the unification of Allah.
• Belief in the Judgment Day
• A belief is that good deeds are rewarded, and harmful acts are punished.
• The belief that Heaven and Hell exist.
• The moral character of a person.
• A call to virtue.
• These surahs contain the verses that necessitate Sujud.
• Makki is the verses that start with the word “Never!” (Arabic: Kalla) and the verses that come before and after it.
• The first sura in this collection is Muqatta’at.
• These surahs are brief, as are the verses.
• Makki surahs emphasize monotheism while condemning polytheism.
• There is very little legislation in the verses.

Surah Madani in the Quran

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) moved his family to Madina. Madni Surahs are the surahs revealed during his ten years there. Surahs from Madina concentrated on establishing Islamic rules, monetary transactions, ethics, family laws, morals, the link between Islam and Muslims, and other global religions. The primary indication of Madani Surah is the presence of permission for “jihad” or an explanation of its injunctions.

Similarly, every verse that includes hypocrites is a Madani Surah, as are any verses that reference the People of the Book, with arguments with the People of the Book (Jews, Christians). Surahs in Madani are typically quite long

Madani Surah Characteristics

Surah Madani Characteristics differ significantly from Makki Surah Characteristics. These chapters are frequently pretty long as well. They are as follows:

• Social obligations and responsibilities
• Permission and Jihadi commandments
• These surahs primarily explain the requirements and penalties (hand).
• These surahs are distinguished because they express social, legal, governmental, and war and peace norms.
• The suras are lengthy, as are the verses.
• The first verse starts with “O you who believe!”
• These verses detail the wrong notions of “people of the book” (Arabic: Christians and Jews), who are then called to Islam.
• The verses outline the status and actions of the hypocrites (Munafiqun) and the Prophet’s (s) and Muslims’ sentiments toward them.

The characteristics above are not exact and are not always accurate, and each has exceptions. The tale of Prophet Adam (a) is told in Surah al-Baqara (Qur’an 2), but it is not Makki. Surah al-Nasr (Qur’an 110) is brief, as are its verses, and its state is similar to that of the Makki surahs, but it is Madani.
