Voice

In grammar, voice tells us whether the subject is the doer of the action (Active Voice) or the receiver of the action (Passive Voice).

Active Voice

In the active voice, the subject acts.

Structure:

• Subject + Verb + Object

Examples:

• The teacher explains the lesson.
• Ram plays cricket.
• Birds build nests.

Why we use Active Voice:

• It is more direct and clear.
• It is common in daily speech and informal writing.

Passive Voice

In passive voice, the subject receives the action of the verb.

Structure:

• Object of Active Sentence + Helping Verb + Past Participle + by + Subject

Example:

• The lesson is explained by the teacher.
• Subject: The lesson (receives the action)
• Verb: is explained
• Agent: by the teacher

How to Change Active Voice to Passive Voice

Step 1: Identify the subject, verb, and object in the active sentence.

Example: She reads a book.

• Verb: reads
• Object: a book

Step 2: Move the object to the subject position.

Step 3: Use the correct form of be + past participle of the main verb.

• Present simple: is/are + past participle → is read
• Past simple: was/were + past participle → was read

Step 4: Add “by + original subject” (if needed).

• A book is read by her.

Passive Voice for All Tenses

Present Simple

• Active: She writes a letter.
• Passive: A letter is written by her.

Past Simple

• Active: They built the bridge.
• Passive: The bridge was built by them.

Future Simple

• Active: He will paint the house.
• Passive: The house will be painted by him.

Present Continuous

• Active: She is reading a story.

Past Continuous
