A House on Fire

For 8th Class Student

Last night, I was playing carrom with my sister and brother. The weather was hot, and we had planned to go for a walk. Around 10 o’clock, I went out to buy medicine for my mother. Suddenly, I saw smoke and flames coming from a nearby house. Many people had gathered there. I found out that the house belonged to Mr. Ghulam Nabi and it was on fire.

Everyone was worried about the safety of the family. Mr. Ghulam Nabi was trying to save his family members. They were scared and crying. His old mother had inhaled too much smoke and was taken to the hospital.

At first, I was shocked and stood still. But then I asked people if I could help. My father and brothers also came out after hearing the noise. My mother and sister brought the women from the burning house into our home. My brothers helped with water buckets to control the fire. I kept calling the fire brigade.

Soon, the electricity was cut off to prevent more damage. After about half an hour, two fire trucks arrived. The firefighters worked hard and put out the fire in about an hour.

The next day, we learned that the fire started because an eight-year-old boy was playing with matches. The fire caused a loss of over twenty lakh rupees, but thankfully, no one died. After that, everyone in the neighbourhood became more careful. Now, children are not allowed to play with fireworks or matches without their parents.

Fires are terrible accidents that cause loss of life and property. I once witnessed such a tragic event in our neighborhood. It was a warm summer evening, and I was reading at home when I heard loud shouts. Rushing outside, I saw thick smoke rising from the house of Mr. Imran, our neighbor.

People had gathered and were trying to save the family. His wife and children were trapped inside, crying for help. Some brave men entered and brought them out safely, although they had inhaled a lot of smoke. I immediately called the fire brigade, while others fetched buckets of water to control the flames. The electricity supply to the house was disconnected to prevent further danger.

After about twenty minutes, two fire engines arrived, and the firefighters worked bravely to put out the blaze. We later learned that the cause of the fire was a short circuit. Property worth many lakhs of rupees was destroyed, but fortunately, no lives were lost. The incident reminded us of the importance of fire safety and quick action in emergencies.

Disasters often strike without warning, leaving behind destruction and sorrow. One such incident that I vividly remember is a house fire I witnessed in our neighborhood last year.

It was late at night when I noticed a strange glow outside my window. To my shock, I saw flames rapidly engulfing the upper floor of Mr. Khalid’s house. Thick clouds of smoke rose into the night sky, and the smell of burning wood and plastic filled the air. Neighbors rushed to the scene, shouting for help. Mr. Khalid’s family was trapped inside. Fortunately, several young men broke open the door and managed to rescue the children and his wife. His elderly mother, however, had fainted due to smoke inhalation and was rushed to the hospital.

I called the fire brigade while others tried to contain the flames using buckets of water and wet blankets. The electricity supply to the building was cut off to avoid electrocution. Within thirty minutes, three fire engines arrived, and the firefighters battled the blaze with professionalism and courage. After nearly ninety minutes, the fire was finally brought under control.

The investigation revealed that a leaking gas cylinder in the kitchen had ignited. The material loss was estimated at over twenty-five lakh rupees, but thankfully, there was no loss of life. The incident was a sobering reminder of how fragile life is and how crucial safety measures are. It also demonstrated the power of community cooperation in times of crisis.
