The BISE AJK board was formed in 1973 by the government of the State of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Before the establishment of BISE AJK, the educational matters of Azad Kashmir were being handled by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE), Lahore. The areas that come under the jurisdiction of BISE AJK board are Muzaffarabad, Neelam, Bagh, Bhimber, Mirpur, Kotli and Poonch.

Along with forming and implementing regulations related to education, the Azad Kashmir Board is also responsible for organizing annual examination of Matric (SSC part 1-2) and Intermediate (HSSC part 1-2) in a fair and transparent way, within the areas that come under its jurisdiction. Once the examinations have been completed, the BISE AJK board announces the result within next 3 to four months and also awards degrees to the students who successfully clear the examinations.
